In 1914
World War I
began. On November 11, 1918, proclaimed the independence of Poland. The office of the Chief of the State occupied
Piłsudski.
World War I ended on November 11, 1918.
In 1921 the
Constitution
was proclaimed
in March.
After 1926 Poland was declared a republic.
Concentration Camp - Auschwitz
On September 1, 1939 began with the German attack on
Westerplatte WWII
(lasted until 2 September 1945). The 17th entered the Soviet Army in Poland and then
Germany
and the
Soviet Union
signed the
Ribbentrop-Molotov
pact. In consequence of these military operations Poland lost its independence. In the areas occupied by Germany and the Soviet Union killed millions of Poles, mostly
Jews,
in
Nazi concentration camps,
but also by starvation and executions. The most famous
death camp
that killed many Jews, Poles and other nationalities is located in
Oświęcim (Auschwitz).
John Paul II
In 1955 he signed
the Warsaw Pact
- a military agreement of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania) who were under the domination of the
Soviet Union.
On October 16, 1978
Karol Wojtyla,
a Cardinal of Krakow was elected
Pope
and takes the name
John Paul II.
It was the first pope since the fifteenth century is not Italian. John Paul II died on 2 April 2005. The successor to John Paul II
Benedict XVI.
